THS ATHLETIC TEAMS OFF TO A GREAT START
Four days down as the first week of school at THS comes to a close. There is life on campus and a lot of activity. Students are reuniting with friends, meeting new staff and reestablishing routines to help them be academically successful. But it is also the first week of the fall athletic season and its been a great week. Here are some of the highlights:
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Our varsity girls are off to a 2-0 start after defeating Atascadero on the road 3-1 and then knocking off Nipomo high in 3 sets last night in their home opener. Its been a great start for the girls who are adjusting to loss of some important senior leaders that graduated and to learning the system of first year coach Meredith Phillips. The girls play tonight and tomorrow in the Morro Bay Tournament with host Morro Bay and a variety of teams mostly from the valley. It should be a good test for the Eagles.
FOOTBALL
The varsity football team left before dawn this morning for their longest road trip of the year to take part in the Rocky Mountain Rumble in Idaho. Coach Crow welcomes the challenge. The Eagles will be playing Sugar-Salem High School, who has won 4 of the last 5 Idaho 3A State Championships. The coach staff shared, "Our players, coaches and parents are extremely excited to be making this trip and look forward to representing our school, community and the Central Coast in a positive light. The players have been working hard since January to get ready for the season and we hope to kick off the 2023 season with a great experience in Idaho."
The JV team played last night and crushed Centennial High 40-6 at Volunteer Stadium. A great beginning and a picture of what to look forward to in the future.
GIRLS TENNIS
A great start for our varsity girls team under first year coach Terri Wilson as the Eagles won both matches this week. On Tuesday the girls shut down Pioneer Valley 8-1 and Thursday they shutout Orcutt Academy 9-0. The Eagles are a solid team with depth in singles and doubles.
The coming week should be a good test as they face Righetti and Paso Robles.
CROSS COUNTRY
Our boys and girls cross teams are solid, experienced and focused. Coach Rosalie Smith is coming off a CIF Track Championship and has some very experienced and talented runners that she believes in. The girls team was strenghtened by the addition of a very talented runner who will make the team even stronger. The boys team has a core of veteran runners led by senior Josh Bell who took 7th place nationally in the Nike Outdoor Championships. This team is going to be fun to watch.
This week the students, fans and the community got to take a look at the team as they took part in two mile "time trials" on campus. Coach Rosalie shared after the event, "I am so impressed with these athletes. They showed up for themselves today and each other. We saw some solid effort and strong early performances! We’re really looking forward to what this season holds!"
The Eagles will be competing on September 2nd in the Big Ditch XC Classic at Talley Fields.
GIRLS GOLF
The girls golf team will open their season this coming Monday at the Mission Club in a tournament with the other league teams. Coach Michelle Hahn leads the Eagles in only their second year. Their team has grown and has gained experience. Eagles #1 Emma Vogelpohl is back and looking to help our team gain more experience and grow the program.
Go Eagles !!!
